How To Update Dated Outdoor Light Fixtures
Restyle Your Old Porch Lights
My wife’s new wreath was the impetus for an overhaul of our porch lights. Sure, I could have gone to the home center and picked up some brand new fixtures, but I like the idea of reusing. The fixtures were functional but dated. At that was required to give these fixtures a face lift was:
- Take them down – Use a health respect for electricity and isolate the circuit at the breaker cabinet before removing.
- Disassemble the parts
- Clean the parts – Note that I recommend using the dishwasher to break up some of the years of grim
- Prep the parts – sand and degrease
- Prime the parts
- Paint the parts with a brushed bronze metalic finish
- Optionally (add a clear coat)
- Reassemble
- Reinstall
In the video link below, I was fairly embarrassed when the light initially didn’t work after all my effort. Fortunately, I was able to quickly determine that I had not screwed the bulb in all the way. My wife and I are really happy with how the lights turned out. They look very contemporary and it cost us only a couple cans of spray paint. Further, the process of disassemble and reassembly is always a good way to improve ones mechanical aptitude.
